Hello
Tonight I successfully patched a Sony BDP S185 for multi region playback. I found a lot of resources on how to do it on this forum and elsewhere, and thought I'd give some little back =)
I thought about just following the trend and getting an universal remote, but they where quite expensive with shipping and all, so instead I got one of these:
Infrared Toy, from Dangerous Prototypes
It is a programmable infrared interface to a computer, so it can both act as a transmitter and as a reciever. Well supported, also
Software wise, it uses WinLIRC. LIRC is more-or-less the standard IR software on LINUX, and WinLIRC is a port to windows. Problem was, the codes I got
from here was in Pronto/Harmony hex, and I needed a LIRC conf file....
Fortunately, someone else had had that problem before and written a small program called
Pronto2Lirc. Pasting the hex codes into a text file that was feed into pronto2lirc gave raw bit timings that LIRC could use
The only hurdle after that was that it appears that Sony waits for a few repetitions before accepting a command. After setting repetitions to 3 in WinLirc I could send the five codes, see that the LED blinked, reset the player and confirm that everything worked.
Also, here is the LIRC config used:
